3 Tips for Terrific Teaching

There was a time, not so long ago, when teachers were eagerly sought-after for their knowledge and wisdom.  Today, students have Google for that.

So, what value do teachers offer today?  In my opinion, our goal is to get creative, engage our learners, and direct our student's intellectual growth.

Here are three ways to do just that.

Tip #1:  Think creatively.  I know, I know.  Some of you are already saying, "But I'm not creative!"  You are probably more creative than you realize.  And, besides, other people's creative ideas are plastered everywhere on the internet. Find some blogs to follow.  Make some boards on Pinterest.  Google a topic or unit study and watch all of the ingenious ways people are teaching these days.  With a little inspiration, your creative juices will flow.

Tip #2:  Get enthused and excited about what you are teaching before you engage your learner.  If we, as teachers, do not get pumped up about what we are about to explain, how can we expect our kiddos to think learning is a fantastic use of time? If a particular subject-matter bores you, think of the poor children.  Instead, use a variety of materials to keep interest high: textbooks, techbooks, library books, audio books, video clips, online articles, or even a field trip when applicable.

Tip #3:  Don't stop teaching and learning the required material just because you come to the end of a chapter.  Extend the learning beyond the pages.  Make a list of the new questions you and/or your child have and delve deeper.  Teach your child that educational exploration should never end, but instead, be the catalyst for our continued growth even as adults.

Sure, Google is pretty spectacular, but nothing will take the place of the care, consideration, and cleverness that a teacher can bring to the lives of children.
